I don't use any fancy software. What I use is readily available at any music store that sells studio gear.
The most important software to me is a "sequencer". It records what I improvise. Later I can correct or fine-tune what I played.
Another software I use is a "software sampler". It let's me simulate a lot of instruments. It works like this: I hold down a key on my keyboard and I hear a trumpet, or a string orchestra, or any other instrument that I might like to use.
Some might like to add a "software synthesizer". It does the same as the software sampler except it simulates synthesizers.
I also use some "plugins" – meaning additional pieces of software that enhance my sequencing software. I use them mainly for effects such as reverb.
