Film Music: Broken Birds

Posted: Wed Jul 26, 2006 12:03 pm

Film Duration: ca. 15 min
Format: 16 mm / Black & White
Sound: Stereo

I have composed my first film score for the experimental film »Broken Birds« created by the Mexican filmmaker Julieta Bartolini. I am presenting you these for me historical pieces.

The movie is about obsession. We experience three scenes with abstract representations of it.

In the first scene we observe a man who is sitting in his kitchen. Again and again he has the urge to get up and search the cupboards and drawers. He is looking for something but he can't find it. For a moment he is distracted and fully relaxed. But his obsession catches up and at the end of the scene he collapses.

In the second scene we observe two men. The one smoking heavily cigarettes and filling the whole room with his smoke. The other is visibly irritated by the smoke but cannot bring up the courage to stop the smoker. Instead he is hoping that the smoker notices by himself how much he is bothering the other. The scene peaks when the smoke is constantly becoming thicker and the obsessed again collapses.

In the third scene we observe a woman sitting next to a man. The man is lying in bed. The woman stretches out her hand to touch him. But every time she gets very close she draws her hand back and is devastated. Again this scene peaks in an absurd climax: Suddenly dead birds fall onto the floor. Hence the name of the movie.

The black and white aesthetics are very dominating and communicate a feeling of universality. In the movie are no sound effects, only music (the music emulates the sound effects at certain moments).

Working on this movie was very enjoyable and a perfect introduction to the world of film music: I had absolute freedom regarding music, and I had a subject matter that was so broad that almost any music would have worked.

At the premier many liked the combination of absurd black and white movie with a retro electro film score. After that the movie was shown on festivals worldwide.

Here is the music. In the descriptions of the individual pieces I am going into more detail.

So far published (more to come shortly):
