This piece is part of the film music for the experimental movie Broken Birds. The movie is about obsession. It is also the first movie that I composed music for.

In the first scene we observe a man who is sitting in his kitchen. Again and again he has the urge to get up and search the cupboards and drawers. He is looking for something but he can't find it. For a moment he is distracted and fully relaxed. But his obsession catches up and at the end of the scene he collapses.

At the beginning we have a kind of intro. The movie's title is shown then. The movie actually starts when the English Horn enters. We then see a man sitting in his kitchen. Everything is in order so far, even though the mood is a bit strange (and the music too). Then we hear the beat that always comes when the man has one of his searching fits. This builds and he calms down a little. We have now this part with all kinds of percussion. In the movie you think everything is all right now. But he again has another fit, worse than ever, and is washed away by a rain of shards. It's an experimental movie after all but it's cool somehow.

With the music I didn't really think about it a whole lot. I simply took what seem attractive to me. Looking back it makes sense for me though. Create a weird atmosphere, have a beat for the action. An almost atonal melody for the cracking man, something completely different for the middle part, because he is distracted, and then coming back to the theme of the beginning when he finally looses it.

Check out the other pieces for this film. You can find them here.
